Multi-stage and heat pump systems need the staging and auxiliary settings configured, not just wired. A default install can run backup heat when it should not. Check the equipment type in the thermostat settings menu first.

This is most common in homes built since 2000. PEX on slab, 200 amp service, builder-grade equipment that reaches end of life across a whole street at once.
