On a closed system with a check valve or regulator, a waterlogged expansion tank sends pressure spikes through the whole house every heating cycle. Tap it — the top half should sound hollow.
This is most common in homes built since 2000. PEX on slab, 200 amp service, builder-grade equipment that reaches end of life across a whole street at once.
