Common in this stock – a back room or enclosed porch was added and never tied into the system. Extending the duct is usually cheaper than a mini-split, but only if the existing system has capacity to give, which is worth measuring first.

This is most common in homes built before about 1940. Pre-war construction — galvanized supply, cast iron drains, cloth-wrapped wiring, ungrounded circuits.
